  1. Capital of ancient Babylonia, on the
  2. bank of the lower Euphrates River. The site
  3. is now in Iraq, 88 km/55 mi S of Baghdad and
  4. 8 km/5 mi N of Hilla, which is built chiefly
  5. of bricks from the ruins of Babylon. In
  6. 1986-89 president Saddam Hessein constructed
  7. a replica of the Southern Palace and citadel
  8. of Nebuchadnezzar II, on the plans of the
  9. German archaeologist Robert Koldeway. The
  10. hanging gardens of Babylon, one of the seven
  11. wonders of the world, were probably erected
  12. on a vaulted stone base, the only stone
  13. construction in the mud-brick city. They
  14. formed a series of terraces, irrigated by a
  15. hydraulic system.
